Halltown Memorial Chapel Association Receives Grant from the National Park Service

The Halltown Memorial Chapel Association is excited to announce that the restoration and preservation of the Halltown Colored Free School (Free School) at 394 Halltown Road in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia 25425 is being supported by a grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.  The Free School was founded and built by freed slave Thomas Edwards to educate his large family, including 13 grandchildren, during a time of separate and unequal educational opportunities. This grant addresses the restoration/rehabilitation of the interior and exterior Free School brick and concrete masonry and the restoration/replacement (as needed) of the interior Free School wood flooring system.
